Mt. Albert Gymnasium Club was established in 1919 - the first class with 10 boys was held in the Mt. Albert Presbyterian Church - where it flourished until its move during 1922 into the King George Hall (was then in the central Mt. Albert shopping area).
By 1955 membership had increased considerably and it became obvious the club was outgrowing these facilities, and plans were put into action to raise funds for the building of a new stadium.
This huge task was undertaken in conjunction with the Mt. Albert Borough Council; progress was slow, but over the years money was collected by many gym club instructors and members in organizing enormous bottle drives, paper collections, raffles, gymnastic displays etc. and in May 1964 a start was made on the building of the new hall. This was named the Frank Turner Stadium; although years later it became more identifiable and known as the Mt. Albert Recreation Centre.
In December 1964 the stadium was opened and the club held its first display inside the superb complex - officially, the venue was opened on March 27th 1965.
Since its inception, Mt. Albert Gym Club has always served the community on a 100% voluntary basis.
